The buzz about this year's gaming ceremony has been intense, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling photo of a strange statue. The secret is finally answered. The acclaimed developer is creating a brand-new Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was debuted with a daring trailer featuring memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the literal descent into chaos.
A Different Direction
Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian warned that a follow-up to its venerated RPGs is not on the cards right now.
However, the developer described this new Divinity as a evolution of the main series. This distinction implies that the team could be crafting a real-time experience rather than another tactical title. Currently, we can only guess, as only a announcement clip is available.
The Legacy of Divinity
The Divinity series is highly rated and arguably it kicked off the recent resurgence of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are defined by rich lore, branching plots, and flexible progression—elements that subsequently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its universe is traditional swords and sorcery, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust given to the player.
Where many modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is brimming with unique possibilities only possible by choosing a distinct build with a unique decision path.
The series is also notoriously permissive, allowing players to find creative solutions throughout the entire experience. Nearly every quest can be solved in multiple ways, often in lateral fashion.
- You might progress the story because you remembered something an animal companion shared.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by teleporting a glob of lava in a unorthodox way.
A New Chapter Begins
It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games in history. Now, fans can anticipate another adventure in this legendary franchise.
