US Military Operation on Caracas Fuels Concerns of Potential Greenland Acquisition.

The recent American bombardment in Venezuela and the seizure of its leader have ignited worry regarding America's ambitions on Greenland. Followers of the former president's political movement have reportedly turned their attention to the strategically important landmass in the wake of the operations in South America.

Provocative Messages and Official Backlash

Only a short time following the commencement of the Venezuelan operation, a prominent conservative podcaster, who is married to a senior presidential aide, posted a symbolic image. The graphic depicted Greenland draped with the American flag, with the cryptic caption: "SOON."

This blatant suggestion to annex the mineral-rich region, which is a member of the North Atlantic alliance, provoked immediate and firm condemnation from Denmark's representatives.

"We are close allies and should continue to work together as such. US security is also the Arctic's and our security," stated the Copenhagen's envoy to the United States. "Our nation and the United States work together to ensure security in the Arctic."

The diplomat further pointed out that Denmark had significantly increased its military budget this year, allocating a substantial sum specifically for Northern and regional security. "And yes, we demand full respect for the territorial integrity of the our realm," he added.

Political Moves and Strategic Goals

The situation were further exacerbated by the previous appointment of a Southern governor as a representative to Greenland. The appointee had openly expressed gratitude to the commander-in-chief, saying it was an "privilege" to work in a volunteer capacity to "bring Greenland into the US."

After the events in Venezuela, this representative commended the president's actions, linking it to the broader "fight against narcotics."

Ever since assuming office, the American leader has consistently unnerved European allies with his stated desire in Greenland. The territory is considered vitally strategic for defence and future mineral exploitation. It already houses the northernmost US military base.

Refusing to Rule Out Military Action

In a notable television interview, the president refused to exclude the resorting to armed action to gain control of Greenland. This position comes during growing great-power competition in the Arctic. "I don't rule it out. I don't say I'm going to do it, but I don't rule out anything... We need Greenland very badly," he stated.

He described Greenland as having a "very small amount of people, which we’ll take care of, and we’ll value them... But we need that for international security."

Growing Tensions and Local Resistance

In reaction to this persistent "rhetoric" of threats, Denmark's security agency took the extraordinary step last month of labelling the United States as a "potential threat."

The prime ministers of Denmark and Greenland issued a joint and forceful rebuke: "We have said it very clearly before. Now we say it again... You must not annex other countries."

Surveys in Greenland reveals a complex sentiment. While a vast majority of the territory's inhabitants desire self-rule from Copenhagen, there is also little to no desire to become part of the United States. The territory has had the legal right to declare sovereignty for over a decade.

Expert Assessment: A Credible Threat?

Military analysts are now reconsidering the possibility of such a move. One policy analyst focusing in military analysis admitted she had previously discounted the rhetoric but was "now not so sure."

"Logistically, it would be feasible for the US to deploy a couple hundred or a few thousand troops inside of Greenland, and it's unclear to me who could intervene about it," she concluded.
